Adult Arctic Tern (Sterna paradisaea) in alternate plumage. Photographed at Potter's Marsh on the outskirts of Anchorage, Alaska in June 1997. Photograph copyright of Angus Wilson©.
Most readily confused with Common (both Northern and Southern hemisphere) and Antarctic Terns (Southern hemisphere only).
Where and When
Famous for its extremely
long annual migration from breeding grounds in the high latitudes of the
Northern hemisphere (Arctic and Sub-arctic) and 'wintering' grounds in
the pack ice zone of Antarctica.
